Leaving the cottage
An original fiction passage set in the nineteenth century.
Clara waited beside the loaded cart while her uncle fastened the final rope. Everyone else had already said farewell to the cottage, but she went back through the gate and stood beneath her old bedroom window. She pressed her palm against the cold stone wall. When her uncle called her, Clara pretended not to hear. Only when the driver lifted the reins did she slowly return to the road, looking over her shoulder until the cottage disappeared behind the trees.
Using your own words or a quotation, give one action which suggests that Clara is unwilling to go.
