1.3.14 Write a letter

Write a letter: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. The transactional text types that students will be asked to write are: letter
  2. What success looks like. The response demonstrates the required skill accurately and purposefully. Relevant evidence, developed reasoning and controlled communication matter more than memorised terminology.
Key Idea
  • This guide belongs to Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 1EN2. Keep its paper structure and task demands distinct from the other Edexcel route.

Write a letter: a reliable method

  1. Decode the task. Identify form, audience, purpose and required content. These conditions control voice, register and organisation.
  2. Plan progression. Give each paragraph a distinct job and arrange ideas to develop argument, description, narrative or explanation.
  3. Craft deliberately. Choose precise vocabulary and vary syntax to control clarity, pace, tone and emphasis. Complexity must remain accurate.
  4. Edit systematically. Check task fulfilment and organisation first, then grammar, punctuation and spelling. Correct repeated error patterns.

Write a letter: application and improvement

  1. Worked thinking. For a transactional task, establish an appropriate voice immediately, develop each required point with explanation or example and finish with an outcome suited to the form.
  2. Diagnose and revise. Name the exact weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin development, weak organisation, unsuitable register or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature specifically.
Exam technique
  • For Pearson Edexcel GCSE English Language 1EN2, follow the exact paper and section instructions. Do not transfer timings, source requirements or question structures from 1EN0.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid generic effects and universal paragraph formulas. Every explanation or crafted choice must fit the text, task, purpose and audience.
Key Idea
  • Apply write a letter specifically within Edexcel 1EN2 Section 1.3. Check that section's source material, command word, mark value and response form before planning. Practise the skill in this context and explain which choice makes the answer more precise, coherent or effective.
Self review
  • Can I explain write a letter in my own words?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?
