8.1.3 AO2: analyse language and structure

analyse language and structure: what the requirement means

  1. Specification focus. AO2: Explain, comment on and analyse how writers use language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers, using relevant subject terminology to support their views
  2. Why it matters. The skill is assessed through the quality of the response, not through a memorised label. Examiners reward choices that are accurate, relevant and clearly connected to meaning, purpose or audience.
Key Idea
  • Treat 'analyse language and structure' as an action you must demonstrate. Build every point or choice around the exact demand of the task.

analyse language and structure: a reliable method

  1. Start with meaning. State what the writer communicates at this moment and how it contributes to the wider text. Terminology should support this interpretation.
  2. Zoom in precisely. Select a word, image, sentence pattern or structural choice with enough detail to analyse its associations and effects.
  3. Explain the method. Show how the choice guides attention, shapes tone or changes the reader's understanding. Avoid vague claims about making the reader continue.
  4. Return to the whole text. Connect the detail to purpose, viewpoint, character, atmosphere or the text's structural development.

analyse language and structure: worked application

  1. Model the thinking. Instead of stating that short sentences create tension, identify where the syntax interrupts a longer descriptive pattern and explain how that sudden contraction mirrors urgency or restricted thought.
  2. Develop rather than list. One developed example normally shows greater control than several labels. Explain the relationship between choice, evidence and effect.
Exam technique
  • For AQA GCSE English Language, follow the command word and source boundaries exactly. Use the mark allocation to control time, and leave a short final check for relevance and technical accuracy.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid formulaic responses that ignore the task. A method is useful only when it helps you make a precise, supported and relevant choice.
Self review
  • Can I explain analyse language and structure in my own words?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or crafted choices rather than general comments?
  • Can I identify one common mistake and correct it?

AO2 asks you to explain, comment on and analyse how a writer uses language and structure to achieve effects and influence readers. The strongest answers connect a precise choice to meaning, purpose, viewpoint or the reader's response.

Treat analysis as an action, not a list of terminology. A subject term is useful only when it helps explain why the writer made a particular choice.

A reliable starting question is: What is the writer communicating at this moment, and why is this choice effective?
