7.5.3 Achieve the purpose of the presentation

Achieve the purpose of the presentation: what the requirement means

  1. Specification focus. achieves the purpose of his or her presentation
  2. Why it matters. The skill is assessed through the quality of the response, not through a memorised label. Examiners reward choices that are accurate, relevant and clearly connected to meaning, purpose or audience.
Key Idea
  • Treat 'Achieve the purpose of the presentation' as an action you must demonstrate. Build every point or choice around the exact demand of the task.

Achieve the purpose of the presentation: a reliable method

  1. Define the communicative goal. Decide exactly what the audience should understand, feel or do. Select content that serves that purpose rather than treating delivery as decoration.
  2. Shape the sequence. Use a purposeful opening, clearly signposted main points and a concise conclusion. Transitions should show how one idea leads to the next.
  3. Control delivery. Vary pace, emphasis and pause to clarify meaning. Maintain an appropriate formal register while sounding natural rather than memorised.
  4. Respond actively. Listen to the full question, answer it directly, then elaborate with an example or qualification. Ask for clarification when wording is genuinely unclear.

Achieve the purpose of the presentation: worked application

  1. Model the thinking. Suppose the audience challenges one claim. A strong response acknowledges the concern, answers it with a relevant example, then links back to the presentation's central argument.
  2. Develop rather than list. One developed example normally shows greater control than several labels. Explain the relationship between choice, evidence and effect.
Exam technique
  • For AQA GCSE English Language, follow the command word and source boundaries exactly. Use the mark allocation to control time, and leave a short final check for relevance and technical accuracy.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid formulaic responses that ignore the task. A method is useful only when it helps you make a precise, supported and relevant choice.
Self review
  • Can I explain achieve the purpose of the presentation in my own words?
  • Can I apply the four-step method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or crafted choices rather than general comments?
  • Can I identify one common mistake and correct it?

To achieve the purpose of a presentation, every choice must help the audience understand, feel or do something specific. The purpose is not simply to sound confident or use impressive vocabulary.

Start by completing this sentence: “By the end of my presentation, I want my audience to...” Possible answers include “understand why recycling matters”, “feel confident about joining the club” or “agree that the proposal is practical”.

For AQA GCSE English Language, examiners reward choices that are accurate, relevant and clearly connected to the task, audience and purpose.
