1.3.4 Reading question structure

Reading question structure: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. Reading (40 marks) (25%) – two linked texts • 1 short form question (1 x 4 marks) • 2 longer form questions (1 x 8, 1 x 12 marks) • 1 extended question (1 x 16 marks)
  2. Why it matters. The requirement is demonstrated through relevant decisions and developed evidence, not by repeating terminology or a memorised paragraph formula.
Key Idea
  • Translate the wording into an action: decide what you must identify, interpret, analyse, compare, evaluate, craft or deliver.

Reading question structure: practical method

  1. Read for the whole. Establish situation, viewpoint, purpose and development before selecting isolated details.
  2. Select evidence. Choose concise references that answer the exact question and remain accurate in context.
  3. Explain choices. Show how language or structure shapes meaning, tone and reader response rather than merely naming a device.
  4. Evaluate the result. Test the interpretation against the whole text and consider a credible alternative where evidence permits.

Reading question structure: apply the skill

  1. Worked approach. Begin with a precise claim, support it with a carefully chosen example, explain the reasoning or crafted choice, and connect the result back to the task.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the exact weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For AQA GCSE English Language, follow command words and source boundaries precisely. Match time and depth to the mark allocation, then check relevance and technical accuracy.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid generic effects and universal formulas. Every explanation or crafted choice must fit this task, text, purpose and audience.
Self review
  • Can I explain reading question structure in my own words?
  • Can I apply the method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

In this reading section, two linked texts are assessed across four questions worth 4, 8, 12 and 16 marks, for 40 marks in total. The section accounts for 25% of the qualification.

The mark value helps you judge how much depth to give, but the wording tells you what to do. Before writing, identify the command word, the focus of the question and which source or sources you may use.
