1.1.1 The three required assessments

The three required assessments: understand the requirement

  1. Specification focus. 1 Explorations in creative reading and writing (page 14) • 2 Writers' viewpoints and perspectives (page 14) • 3 Non-exam assessment (page 15)
  2. Why it matters. The requirement is demonstrated through relevant decisions and developed evidence, not by repeating terminology or a memorised paragraph formula.
Key Idea
  • Translate the wording into an action: decide what you must identify, interpret, analyse, compare, evaluate, craft or deliver.

The three required assessments: practical method

  1. Read for the whole. Establish situation, viewpoint, purpose and development before selecting isolated details.
  2. Select evidence. Choose concise references that answer the exact question and remain accurate in context.
  3. Explain choices. Show how language or structure shapes meaning, tone and reader response rather than merely naming a device.
  4. Evaluate the result. Test the interpretation against the whole text and consider a credible alternative where evidence permits.

The three required assessments: apply the skill

  1. Worked approach. Begin with a precise claim, support it with a carefully chosen example, explain the reasoning or crafted choice, and connect the result back to the task.
  2. Improve through diagnosis. Name the exact weakness, such as unsupported inference, thin analysis, weak organisation or inaccurate expression, then revise that feature and compare the result.
Exam technique
  • For AQA GCSE English Language, follow command words and source boundaries precisely. Match time and depth to the mark allocation, then check relevance and technical accuracy.
Common Mistake
  • Avoid generic effects and universal formulas. Every explanation or crafted choice must fit this task, text, purpose and audience.
Self review
  • Can I explain the three required assessments in my own words?
  • Can I apply the method to an unfamiliar task?
  • Have I used precise evidence or deliberate crafted choices?
  • Can I identify and correct one likely weakness?

AQA GCSE English Language has three required assessments. Paper 1 is Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing, Paper 2 is Writers' Viewpoints and Perspectives, and the non-exam assessment tests spoken language.

Each written paper lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 80 marks and contributes 50% of the GCSE. The spoken language assessment is reported separately as Pass, Merit, Distinction or Not Classified and does not contribute to the numerical GCSE grade.

Success comes from translating each task into an action. Command words tell you whether to identify, interpret, analyse, compare, evaluate, craft or deliver.
