How the greenhouse effect works

How the greenhouse effect works

Diagram showing short-wavelength sunlight entering the atmosphere and long-wavelength infrared radiation being absorbed and re-emitted by greenhouse gases

The Sun gives out mainly short-wavelength radiation, including visible light, ultraviolet and near-infrared. Most of it passes through the atmosphere, although some is reflected back into space by clouds, ice and the atmosphere.
