Impure copper is purified by electrolysis using an impure copper anode, a pure copper cathode and copper(II) sulfate solution. The impure copper contains small amounts of silver and zinc.
Where do the silver and the zinc end up?
Silver: stays in the solution as ions; zinc: forms a sludge below the anode
Silver: deposits on the cathode; zinc: stays in the solution as ions
