Question 3

An agricultural scientist analyzed the concentration of dissolved fertilizer salts in a drainage runoff sample.

The scientist used the following procedure:

  1. Filter the runoff water sample to remove suspended soil particles.
  2. Measure the mass of a clean, dry porcelain crucible.
  3. Pipette exactly 40 cm340\text{ cm}^340 cm3 of the filtered runoff water into the crucible.
  4. Heat the crucible gently until all the water has evaporated to dryness.
  5. Measure the mass of the crucible and the dry residue.

The results of the experiment are recorded in the table below:

MeasurementMass (g)
Empty crucible28.45228.45228.452
Crucible and dry residue28.52428.52428.524

Calculate the concentration of dissolved fertilizer salts in this runoff sample, in g dm−3\text{g dm}^{-3}g dm−3.
