Reading formulae and relative mass

Counting atoms in H2O, CO2, Mg(OH)2 and Al2(SO4)3 with subscripts and bracket multipliers labelled

A chemical formula shows the element symbols and how many atoms are present. A subscript affects only the symbol just before it, and if there is no subscript the count is 1. A number outside brackets multiplies everything inside the bracketed group.
