What is a polymer?

Monomer ethene, a bracketed poly(ethene) repeat unit, and two polymer chains with covalent bonds within chains and intermolecular forces between chains labelled A polymer is a substance made of very large molecules formed from many repeating units joined together. In a formula such as [−CH2−CH2−]n\left[-\text{CH}_2-\text{CH}_2-\right]_n[−CH2−CH2−]n, the repeat unit is inside the brackets and nnn means the pattern repeats many times.
