What a mole counts

Comparison of 1 mol of carbon atoms, carbon dioxide molecules and sodium chloride formula units, each containing 6.02 \times 10^{23} particles but with masses 12 g, 44 g and 58.5 g

A mole is a counting unit for chemistry, just like a dozen is a counting unit in everyday life. It tells us the amount of substance in a sample.
