Mole ratios and the big idea
A balanced equation is a mole recipe. In Mg+2HCl→MgCl2+H2\text{Mg} + 2\text{HCl} \to \text{MgCl}_2 + \text{H}_2Mg+2HCl→MgCl2+H2, the coefficients show a mole ratio of 1:2:1:11:2:1:11:2:1:1, so 1 mol1 \, \text{mol}1mol of magnesium needs 2 mol2 \, \text{mol}2mol of hydrochloric acid.
