Human activity and the greenhouse effect

Human activities increase atmospheric greenhouse gases in several ways. Burning fossil fuels releases carbon dioxide. Deforestation reduces the removal of carbon dioxide by photosynthesis, while burning or decay of cleared trees releases stored carbon mainly as carbon dioxide. Cattle farming, rice fields, and landfill sites release methane.

A greenhouse gas absorbs infrared radiation emitted by Earth and transfers energy to the surroundings. This warms the atmosphere through the greenhouse effect.
