Why cracking is useful

Flow diagram showing a long-chain hydrocarbon cracking into a short-chain alkane fuel and an alkene with a C=C double bond Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons, which are compounds made from carbon and hydrogen only. Many of these are long-chain alkanes, and long-chain molecules are less useful as fuels because they have higher boiling points and are harder to ignite.
