A student investigated the voltage produced by different chemical cells using the apparatus shown below.

An electrochemical cell. A beaker containing a light-grey liquid labelled 'Electrolyte solution'. Hanging into the liquid are two vertical metal bar electrodes. The left one is labelled 'Iron' and the right one is labelled 'Electrode X'. Wires connect the top of both electrodes to a circular voltmeter labelled 'V' at the top.

The student used the following method:

  1. Use magnesium as electrode X.
  2. Record the cell voltage.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 using different metals as electrode X.
