What is a carbonate?

A carbonate is a compound containing the carbonate ion, CO32−\text{CO}_3^{2-}CO32−​. The carbonate ion has a charge of 2−2-2−, so it combines with positive ions to form compounds such as sodium carbonate, Na2CO3\text{Na}_2\text{CO}_3Na2​CO3​.
