What makes a molecule an amino acid?

An amino acid contains both an amino group, -NH2\text{-NH}_2-NH2​, and a carboxylic acid group, -COOH\text{-COOH}-COOH. If both of these functional groups are present in the same molecule, it is an amino acid.
