The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 requires an employer, so far as reasonably practicable, to protect the health, safety and welfare of employees and to protect other people affected by its work, including visitors and customers. Employers must provide safe premises, safe machinery, safe working methods, training, supervision and suitable protective equipment where required. Specific regulations set out more detailed duties, including when protective equipment must be provided free of charge.
