What a potometer measures

What a potometer measures

Labelled bubble potometer showing a leafy shoot sealed into water-filled tubing, a reservoir and tap, a scaled capillary tube, one air bubble, its direction of movement, and the open end in water A potometer measures the rate at which a leafy shoot takes up water. This is used to estimate transpiration rate because most water taken up by the shoot is eventually lost from the leaves as water vapour.
