Nitrogen moves through ecosystems
Nitrogen moves through ecosystems
The nitrogen cycle is the movement of nitrogen between the atmosphere, soil and living organisms. Nitrogen fixation by bacteria converts atmospheric nitrogen, N2N_2N2, into ammonia, NH3NH_3NH3, which forms ammonium ions, NH4+NH_4^+NH4+, in the soil. Lightning forms nitrogen oxides that dissolve in rain and reach the soil as nitrate compounds.
