The plant transport system
The plant transport system
Xylem and phloem are transport tissues found together in vascular bundles. These bundles run through roots, stems and leaf veins.
Xylem vessels are long, hollow tubes formed from dead cells joined end to end. Their end walls break down to create a continuous lumen, their walls are strengthened with lignin, and pits allow water to move sideways.
Phloem consists of living sieve tube elements joined end to end by perforated sieve plates. Each sieve tube element is supported by a companion cell.
