The scale of cells

The scale of cells

Metric-prefix scale from millimetres to picometres, with each step linked by multiplication or division by 1000 and biological examples aligned to suitable units

A prefix represents a power of ten: milli is 10−310^{-3}10−3, micro is 10−610^{-6}10−6, nano is 10−910^{-9}10−9, and pico is 10−1210^{-12}10−12. The symbol μ\muμ is the Greek letter mu, so a micrometre is written μm\mu\text{m}μm.
