The scale of cells and organelles

The scale of cells and organelles

Cells are usually measured in micrometres, while much smaller structures such as ribosomes are measured in nanometres. Since 1000 nm=1 μm1000 \, \text{nm} = 1 \, \mu\text{m}1000nm=1μm, a 20 nm20 \, \text{nm}20nm ribosome is 0.02 μm0.02 \, \mu\text{m}0.02μm across.

A plant cell is typically 505050 to 100 μm100 \, \mu\text{m}100μm across, while an animal cell is around 20 μm20 \, \mu\text{m}20μm across.
