The non-venomous scarlet kingsnake and the highly venomous eastern coral snake both have bright red, yellow, and black banded patterns.

Figure 12 shows a scarlet kingsnake and an eastern coral snake.

A diagram comparing the harmless scarlet kingsnake and the venomous eastern coral snake. On the left is the scarlet kingsnake, showcasing a ring pattern of red, black, yellow, black, red. On the right is the eastern coral snake, showcasing a ring pattern of red, yellow, black, yellow, red. Both snakes are coiled and look extremely similar due to their bright, repeating color rings.

The coral snake has highly toxic venom to defend itself against predators. The kingsnake is harmless and does not have venom. Scarlet kingsnakes and eastern coral snakes live in the same forest habitats.
