Mendel's pea experiments

  1. Gregor Mendel was a monk who carried out breeding experiments on pea plants in the mid-180018001800s.
  2. He crossed pea plants with different characteristics, such as tall and short, and counted the offspring over several generations.
  3. He found that each characteristic was passed on in fixed ratios, such as 3:13:13:1.
  4. From this he concluded that each characteristic is determined by separate units of inheritance, passed from parents to offspring unchanged.

Mendel crossed purple and white pea plants; the first generation was all purple and the next showed a 3:1 ratio of purple to white.

Example

Crossing tall and short peas, then breeding the offspring, gave a 3:13:13:1 ratio of tall to short.

Why Mendel was overlooked

  1. Mendel worked before chromosomes, genes or DNA were known about.
  2. Because there was no way to explain what his units were, the importance of his discovery was not recognised at the time.
  3. His work was only appreciated after his death, once chromosomes had been discovered.

Mendel described how characteristics are inherited long before anyone knew that genes or DNA existed.

From units to genes and DNA

Definition

Gene

A short section of DNA that codes for a particular protein and controls a characteristic.

  1. During the late 1800s, scientists watching cells divide were able to see how chromosomes moved and separated.
  2. By the early 1900s, researchers had noticed that these chromosomes behaved in much the same way as Mendel's units.
  3. That similarity pointed to a clear conclusion: the units, which we now call genes, must sit on the chromosomes themselves.
  4. Around the middle of the 1900s, the structure of DNA was worked out, which finally revealed how genes actually do their job.

A chromosome carrying many genes at fixed positions, matching the idea that Mendel's units are genes located on chromosomes.

Gregor Mendel was a monk who bred pea plants in the mid-1800s. He studied contrasting characteristics, such as tall and short stems, using true-breeding pea plants.

Mendel crossed true-breeding tall plants with true-breeding short plants. The first-generation (F1F_1F1​) offspring were tall hybrids. He then self-pollinated or interbred these heterozygous F1F_1F1​ plants. Under complete dominance, the second-generation (F2F_2F2​) offspring showed an approximate phenotypic ratio of 3:13:13:1 tall to short plants.

He concluded that each characteristic was controlled by separate units of inheritance. These units were passed from parents to offspring unchanged.
