A student investigates a bean plant. Cells at the surface of a root absorb water and mineral ions from the soil. The water and mineral ions then enter the xylem and move towards the stem. Phloem carries dissolved sugars from the leaves into the root, where some of the sugars are stored.
Explain how these observations support the classification of the root as an organ.
