A student set up a sealed glass chamber containing damp soil, a clover plant (Trifolium repens), and a single woodlouse (Oniscus asellus) to study gas exchange in a closed terrestrial micro-ecosystem. The chamber was equipped with a carbon dioxide (CO2CO_2CO2​) sensor connected to a continuous data logger.

For the first 5 days, the chamber was kept under a bright, constant light source. At the start of Day 5, the chamber was completely wrapped in light-proof black foil. On Day 8, the woodlouse died inside the chamber.
