- This water is used by organisms and drains through rivers back into the seas, where the cycle starts again.
The carbon cycle

The constant recycling of carbon between the air, living organisms and the soil through photosynthesis, respiration, decomposition and combustion.
- Carbon is recycled between the air, living organisms and the soil.
- Producers remove carbon dioxide from the air by photosynthesis, locking the carbon into glucose and biomass: 6CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O26CO_2 + 6H_2O \rightarrow C_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_26CO2+6H2O→C6H12O6+6O2.
- The carbon then passes along food chains as animals eat producers and one another.
- All organisms return carbon dioxide to the air by respiration: C6H12O6+6O2→6CO2+6H2OC_6H_{12}O_6 + 6O_2 \rightarrow 6CO_2 + 6H_2OC6H12O6+6O2→6CO2+6H2O.
- Burning, or combustion, of wood and fossil fuels also releases carbon dioxide back into the air.

Common Mistake
