Materials cycle, energy flows

Materials such as carbon, water and mineral ions are repeatedly reused in ecosystems. Atoms from dead organisms can eventually become part of new organisms. Decomposers return carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and mineral ions to the soil. These materials are stored as carbon dioxide in air and mineral ions in soil, from which producers take them up.
