Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration. The difference in concentration between two regions is called the concentration gradient. For example, oxygen particles can cross a continuous partially permeable cell membrane from a higher concentration outside a respiring cell to a lower concentration inside it.
