How contraception prevents pregnancy

Contraception is the use of hormonal or non-hormonal methods to prevent pregnancy. Different methods act in different ways. Hormonal methods can prevent an egg from maturing or being released and can thicken cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach an egg.
