Scientists used an early light microscope to classify two very small microorganisms by their appearance. Microorganism X was assigned to Bacteria and microorganism Y was assigned to Archaea.
The scientists then chemically analysed the same section of DNA from each microorganism and from organisms whose domains were already known. A higher percentage match indicates that organisms are more closely related.
| Microorganism | Percentage match with a known protist | Percentage match with a known true bacterium | Percentage match with a known archaeon |
|---|---|---|---|
| X | 94 | 56 | 51 |
| Y | 43 | 89 | 64 |
Explain how and why the scientists should change the domain classifications of microorganisms X and Y.
