From the eighteenth to twentieth centuries, Hindu traditions were reshaped by British colonial rule, missionary criticism, Islamic interaction, secularisation and science. Reformers had to decide whether to defend older practices, reinterpret scripture, reform society, or mobilise Hindu identity politically.
