What this contemporary study investigated

Flow diagram showing pre-adoption adversity leading to an internationally adopted child, then age seven self-report branching into internalising problems like worry and sadness and externalising problems like aggression and hyperactivity, with a note that the link is correlational not causal

Gagnon-Oosterwaal et al. (2012) is a contemporary Child Psychology study that asked whether difficult experiences before international adoption were linked to behaviour problems children reported themselves at about age seven. The study matters because many adoption studies rely on adults' reports, but this one takes the child's own perspective seriously.
