The classic study by Raine et al. (1997) investigated whether murderers who pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity (NGRI) showed evidence of brain dysfunction. Pleading NGRI is a legal defense arguing that a severe mental disorder at the time of the offense made the individual not fully responsible for their actions.
