Ascendancy means a period of rising power, dominance and influence. For the Ottomans, 1453-1606 is the phase when conquest, state building and imperial image pushed the empire to the centre of European and Mediterranean politics. It is not yet a story of collapse, though by 1606 limits were clearer.
