The carboxyl group and its relatives

A carboxylic acid contains the carboxyl group, −COOH-COOH−COOH, usually written as RCOOHRCOOHRCOOH. The acidic hydrogen is the one on the O−HO-HO−H bond, not on the carbon chain.
