Flowchart of actual offending moving through reporting, recording, arrest, conviction and imprisonment, with social class, gender, ethnicity and age affecting every stage

The social distribution of crime and deviance is the pattern of who is more or less likely to be recorded as offending, suspected, arrested, convicted or imprisoned across groups such as class, gender, ethnicity and age. Crime breaks the law, while deviance breaks social norms, so a person can be deviant without necessarily committing a crime.
