The two axes

Sociological theories can be mapped using two separate axes. Consensus versus conflict asks whether society is mainly held together by shared values or shaped by inequality and domination.

Examples:

  • Structural + consensus: functionalism
  • Structural + conflict: Marxism and many feminist theories
  • On the action side: interactionism and labelling theory
