"For me, everyday socialising is like trying to read a book in a language I only half-understand. People assume that because I am academically successful and have a high IQ, I should easily pick up on when a colleague is feeling frustrated, sarcastic, or anxious. But I simply cannot read those subtle micro-expressions around the eyes. I have to rely on explicit, literal verbal communication. When someone gives me a 'look', I miss the emotional nuance entirely, which can lead to exhausting misunderstandings."
