Question 194

Social Perception Study

In a study investigating the impact of semantic priming on social perception, eighty participants were recruited and randomly allocated to one of two groups.

  • Condition 1: Participants completed a word-search puzzle containing words associated with industriousness and intelligence (e.g., focused, diligent, capable) before reading an ambiguous description of an individual's work day.
  • Condition 2: The procedure was identical, but participants completed a word-search puzzle containing words associated with leisure and distraction (e.g., relaxed, unproductive, procrastinate) before reading the same ambiguous description.

Participants in both groups then rated the described individual's work ethic on a scale of 1 (extremely poor) to 10 (exemplary).

Discuss why this experimental design (independent groups) was appropriate for this study.
