Cognitive psychologists are investigating whether binaural auditory stimulation can enhance spatial memory performance during high-stress operational tasks. They design an experiment to compare the effects of a 40 Hz gamma-frequency binaural beat against a flat white noise control. The study takes place in a sound-attenuated, windowless laboratory cubicle. Participants sit at a mock flight simulator console, wear professional-grade noise-cancelling headphones, and are given 15 seconds to memorize a sequence of 12 flight coordinates displayed on a screen.
