Environmental scents are often claimed to influence cognitive functioning, with some aromas purported to enhance spatial awareness and memory. To investigate this, researchers designed an experiment to determine whether inhaling peppermint essential oil improves performance on a spatial memory task. Participants are asked to study a complex 3D virtual maze and then reconstruct its layout. The researchers compare the number of directional errors made by participants when the testing room is scented with peppermint oil versus when the room has a neutral, unscented atmosphere.
The researchers decide to use a repeated measures design for this study.
