'Flow state' is a psychological phenomenon where an individual is fully immersed in an activity with energized focus and enjoyment. While many outdoor enthusiasts report experiencing flow, we know very little about the precise cognitive and environmental triggers that induce it during solo wilderness hiking. Why do some hikers experience flow during steep ascents, while others feel intense fatigue or anxiety? How do external factors, such as changing weather conditions or encountering wildlife, influence this optimal state of consciousness? Does flow state increase or decrease as hikers reach higher altitudes? There is much we do not know. To investigate further, sports psychologists want to use the self-report method to find out more about hikers' experiences of flow state.
