Question 64

Evaluating Cognitive Fatigue in Air Traffic Controllers

Cognitive fatigue is the mental exhaustion that results from prolonged periods of demanding cognitive activity. In aviation safety, understanding how operators recognize and manage their own fatigue is critical. Since cognitive fatigue is highly subjective and depends on individual tolerance, work schedules, and personal stressors, researchers believe a self-report method is the most appropriate way to obtain rich, qualitative data about operators' subjective experiences.

A research team in aviation psychology is planning a study using self-report questionnaires to investigate how air traffic controllers perceive and monitor their own cognitive fatigue during high-density operations.

Outline two weaknesses of using the self-report method in this study.
