Question 87

Article

How long did you spend online today?

For most of us, digital connectivity is like the air we breathe—essential, omnipresent, and largely invisible. Yet, if you ask someone to estimate their daily smartphone usage, they are likely to give you an answer wildly disconnected from reality.

A recent investigation highlighted this disconnect by comparing participants' estimated social media usage with objective device logs.

The findings were striking:

  • When asked to estimate daily screen time, 74% of participants underestimated their actual usage by more than 90 minutes.
  • Furthermore, 65% of respondents claimed that they "rarely or never" use social media during work or study hours. However, objective tracking data revealed that these same participants accessed social media platforms an average of 12 times per hour during these periods.

This suggests that individuals are often poor judges of their own habitual behaviours, making self-reports an unreliable mirror for actual practice.

With reference to the article, explain one weakness of using the self-report method in research.
