A researcher in transport psychology wanted to investigate whether virtual reality (VR) simulator training is more effective than traditional classroom-based instruction for newly qualified drivers.
To test this, she recruited 20 participants and randomly allocated 10 to undergo a VR simulator course, while the other 10 completed a classroom-based safety course. Following their respective training, all 20 participants completed a driving assessment on a closed-circuit test track. An independent assessor, who was blind to the participants' training conditions, rated each driver's hazard perception and safety awareness on a scale from 1 (unacceptable) to 20 (exemplary).
The results are shown in the table below:
| Hazard Perception Ratings (1–20) | |
|---|---|
| VR Simulator Group | Classroom Group |
| 14 | 9 |
| 18 | 11 |
| 12 | 8 |
| 15 | 14 |
| 17 | 10 |
| 11 | 12 |
| 16 | 11 |
| 15 | 7 |
| 13 | 13 |
| 19 | 10 |
