Why adolescence matters

Side view of the adolescent brain showing the prefrontal cortex, limbic reward system, ventral striatum, and a timeline where reward sensitivity peaks before control fully matures. Adolescence is a developmental period where brain systems for reward, emotion and self-control do not mature at the same speed.
