Case Study: Training Misconceptions in the Modern Workplace

What would we do without the ability to rapidly acquire and accurately apply new professional skills? In our fast-paced economic climate, the speed at which employees learn and adapt is considered paramount. Yet, understanding how human memory actually processes, stores, and retrieves complex information during training remains low among corporate leaders.

A recent study investigated the gap between cognitive psychology findings and the beliefs held by corporate HR representatives. Some key findings include:

  • When asked if they agreed that "employees can effectively multitask during virtual training presentations without hurting their long-term recall of critical information," 58% of corporate managers strongly or mostly agreed, compared with 0% of cognitive science experts.
  • When asked if "block-learning (massed practice, such as an intensive 8-hour seminar) produces better long-term retention than spaced-learning modules spreading the same content over several weeks," 74% of corporate managers agreed, compared with just 4% of cognitive research experts.
  • Furthermore, 65% of managers still firmly believed in designing training programs around auditory, visual, or kinesthetic "learning styles" despite a complete lack of empirical replication in psychological literature.

Adapted from a contemporary study on workplace learning and cognitive misconceptions.

Using your knowledge of psychology, suggest ways that HR training officers could be taught to improve their understanding of how their employees' working memory and retention work.
